How These Motorized Roman Shades Elevate Laundry Room Zen

Four custom wood-framed windows with an intricate triple stair-step framing in the client’s laundry room stretch ten feet high and sit out of reach due to an expansive corner countertop. A cord wasn’t even an option for this design. Instead, the designer’s challenge was to fabricate and install four motorized Roman shades to fit perfectly, with all shades able to rise and descend at the same rate of speed to maintain the architectural grace of the windows.  The widest mount for these windows was only 1.5 inches. Keely Hersh of Right at Home Interiors sourced an unusually sized tubular motor from Shades of Automation to fit a narrow headrail. It paired with a Somfy motor and remote control system that supported operating the four separate 69″ long Roman shades simultaneously and individually—an essential feature. The laundry room features a striking mosaic tile backsplash and cream-colored cabinets. These elements inspired the designer’s choice of a warm and textured Belgian linen fabric from Anna Elisabeth for the shades.

Hersh used careful planning and measuring as the main tools for her fabrication. Each finished shade is tailored to perfection and fits perfectly within the wood window frames. When the shades are down, they sit crisply in the window frames, ensuring no unwanted light gaps. As the shades rise, they fold accordion-style, creating a shape evocative of sand dunes, which harmonizes with the room’s other elements.

One striking feature of this design is the impeccable installation of the two corner window shades. As the shades ascend and descend, the fabric remains smooth, folding with perfect synchronization. This brilliant installation was achieved through careful planning and expert craftsmanship, resulting in a seamless and sophisticated appearance.

The tranquil ambiance created by these hues is ideal for fostering a sense of calm and peace, making it the perfect setting for laundry tasks.
